Innovative Wooden Structures and Bridges
The Conference 'Innovative Wooden Structures and Bridges', Lahti, Finland, 29 - 31 August 2001, presented the newest developments and achievements in wooden structures' research and technology. It was organised by the Finnish Group of IABSE, the Association of Finnish Civil Engineers RIL and the Helsinki University of Technology/Bridge Engineering.

The following Keynote Sessions were presented:

•    New Technologies for Timber Structures
      Julius Natterer, Switzerland
•    Overview of Developments and Research in Wooden Structures in Australia and New Zealand
      Keith Crew, Australia
•    Seismic Performance of Wooden Buildings
      Isao Sakamoto, Japan.

The Keynote Lectures, papers and posters presented have been collected in a Report and a CD and are a valuable contribution to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of wooden structures. The proceedings contain papers on a variety of topics ranging from architecture and design to testing and rehabilitation. Buildings and bridges, as well as special structures are dealt with. The papers, 100 altogether, representing the streamlines of the current research and practical applications, are grouped under the following themes:

Architecture and Innovation / Durability and Fire Resistance / Design and Analysis / Houses and Buildings / Bridges / Special Structures / Joints and Connections / Composite Construction / Materials and Testing / Rehabilitation / Seismic Aspects.

Thanks to the provision of an overview of the latest research results and examples of good practice, the Conference Report will prove useful for the owners, designers, contractors and wood industry, in developing and producing even more advanced wood and timber structures in the future.
