A modern type of continuous shear connectors - the composite dowel, is an upcoming solution in composite beams. It permits the composite girders without an upper steel flange and an enduring shear connection also of high strength steel with high strength concrete. This innovative shear connection is implemented in VFT-WIB® construction method where connection between the halved steel girder and the concrete is provided by steel dowels manufactured by a special cutting line of the web. Hence steel dowels are manufactured during processing of rolled beams in steel construction without any additional resource. However classic approach for design of the connection based on experimental results of push-out standard tests was used at the beginning, the later investigations proved, that design concept for steel dowels must be based on the both appropriate stress criterion and theory of elasticity. Complexity of the problem leads to the approach based on finite element method and advanced numerical studies supported by experimental results. The newest approach assumes the absence of uplifting forces and produces a general design concept for steel dowels, independent on the connector’s shape.
