Construction of the Jiangyin Yangtze Suspension Bridge
S. Zhou, China

The Jiangyin Yangtze Bridge is located in the center of the Jiangsu Province. It is shared by two national truck expressways; the Tongjiang-Sanya Expressway on the east coast and the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway on the west. The Jiangyin Yangtze Bridge has 6 traffic lanes, 3 in each direction. The height clearance for navigation is 50 m. The bridge is located at the narrowest section of the river. The suspension bridge with one span crossing the river was selected for not interfering with flood discharge and navigation. Its main span is 1385 m long. The layout and shape of the bridge is an aesthetic design.
The main bridge is made of flat streamlined steel box girders, joined by pre-stressed continuous concrete girders of the same depth in approach spans of the two side spans. In contrast, the towers and anchors stand unconquerably rigid and strong. Thus, the whole bridge turns out to be harmonious and appealing.
