B. H. Hesselink, H. Meersma, The Netherlands
The Railway bridge across the Dintel Harbour is the first railway bridge in The Netherlands with cables as hangers. Other new features for a bridge of this size are the two continuously ballasted tracks and the complete absence of bolts and rivets The bridge was welded throughout . The tapered flange plates of the main girder are an additional feature.
The bridge in the Harbour Line is the beginning of the Betuweroute &endash; the rail freight artery that links the port with its hinterland. In the future, the Harbour Line- currently single-track &endash; will be upgraded to a double- track electrified line to cope with increased demand.
