Cavtat
The city of Cavtat is situated at the very south of the Republic of Croatia, 18 km from the centre of Dubrovnik and only 6 km from Dubrovnik International Airport. It has a population of some 1,500 inhabitants and is part of the Dubrovnik Riviera. The unpolluted sea and natural beauty of Mediterranean vegetation that covers the whole peninsula with the harmony of old and new architecture sets the natural beauty of Cavtat.
In ancient times, Cavtat was a Greek settlement known as Epidaurum, so its cultural life and historical tradition is thereby enriched. Among the attractions of Cavtat are the Rector's Palace, the Baroque church of St. Nikola, the Franciscan monastery, Bogišić's scientific collection, the Vlaho Bukovac Art Gallery, the Račić Mausoleum, designed by the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, archaeological sites of the pre-Slav period, city walls, the Šipun cave etc. Cavtat also offers a 7 km promenade by pine forests paths only a few meters from the sea. Cavtat is one of the rare places on the Croatian coast that can offer such harmony.
Travel Information
The most beautiful jewel of Croatia’s cultural heritage, the old city of Dubrovnik, is located in the southernmost part of the sunniest Croatian tourist region of all: the Dalmatia. Dubrovnik area comprises one county, the County of Dubrovnik-Neretva, which extends almost entirely along the shore. Within it is Dubrovnik, the most beautiful and the most important, but by no means the only, cultural gem.
The vista of the old city of Dubrovnik, approached from the direction of Dubrovnik airport, is one of the best known panoramas of Croatia and of the whole of the Mediterranean area. Indeed, the first sentence of the description of Dubrovnik in the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage begins with the words: “Pearl of the Adriatic on the Dalmatian coast...”, for few are the cities which enjoy such a wonderful position on a rocky shoreline above the sea, and few are the places where medieval stone walls and fortresses are so well preserved.
